Changes in Australia Global Talent VISA Program in 2022

To stimulate economic recovery and address the skilled labour shortage, the Australian government made numerous changes to immigration rules in order to ease the inflow of skilled workers into the country.

The Global Talent Visa programme seeks to attract top talent in critical industries. Individuals who are distinguished in their field in the government’s target sectors and are likely to earn at least AU$158,500 in Australia are targeted by the programme. This figure refers to the Fair Work High Income Threshold (FWHIT), which is indexed annually on July 1st.

The Global Talent Visa Program is a streamlined visa application process. It is for highly skilled professionals who want to work and live in Australia permanently.

The programme was created in Australia to help the economy by introducing innovative skills to high-demand industries. This will benefit Australians by transferring skills, promoting innovation, and creating jobs.

Prospective migrants are also attracted to Australia. This trend can be attributed to Australia’s prosperity, security, and cultural diversity. In 2021-22, the government plans to invite 15000 immigrants through the GTI programme. A candidate must be highly skilled in one of the ten target sectors in 2021-2022 and earn a salary that meets the high income threshold to be invited to apply for a visa under the Global Talent Visa Program.

Australia intends to bring in highly skilled professionals, senior executives, and exceptional individuals who are at the cutting edge of innovation within the target sectors, and who will help create opportunities by promoting innovation and creating jobs, through the GTI programme.

The target Sectors for which Australia aims to invite skilled professional/workers for are – Agri-food and agritech; financial services and Fintech; digital technology; defence, advanced manufacturing & space; energy; circular economy; infrastructure & tourism; health industries; resources; and education.

For being eligible for the Global Talent Visa an applicant must:

•  Demonstrate their international standing by providing evidence of outstanding achievements
•  Hold a prominent position in their field of expertise
•  Provide evidence that they would be a valuable asset to Australia in their field of expertise.
•  Should not face any trouble finding work or establishing themselves in their field in Australia
•  Get nominated by a national organisation in Australia in the same field as the applicant.

Candidates must be high calibre and have a track record of professional success. Examples include senior positions, patents, professional awards, international publications, and memberships.

Successful candidates will need to

demonstrate that their outstanding achievements are recognised internationally and that they maintain prominence in their fields.

Show that they are likely to earn at least Australia’s High Income Threshold, which is currently AUD153,600, and

Be nominated by an organisation or individual before submitting their Expression of Interest, demonstrating the candidate’s exceptional talent and international reputation in their sector.

High Income Threshold

Candidates must be able to command a salary at or above the Fair Work high income threshold of AUD158,500. This figure is updated annually on July 1. The government will consider the following factors when evaluating this: current salary as shown on payslips or a contract;
