Education system in Cyprus

The education system has been categorized four main types:

• Public Universities
• Private Universities
• Public non-university level Institutions
• Private non-university level Institutions

There are three public universities. Cyprus offers you with programs at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels. The language of instruction is Greek and Turkish which are also the official languages of Republic of Cyprus. The policies of the government for higher education are devised to fulfill the needs of their own students and foreign students in order to establish Cyprus as a regional educational and research centre. The system looks forward to make Cyrus – a centre for international students. Its system has been shaped by the European Higher Education Area. The competent body for quality assurance and accreditation of the programmes offered by Private Institutions of Higher Education is the Council for Educational-Accreditation. They offer vocational programmes of study with a duration ranging from 1 to 3 years.

Admissions Procedure

Normally, there is no IELTS requirement. Applications to the undergraduate programs are accepted twice a year.Every applicant who intends to study in Cyprus must have completed a secondary level education or the equivalent of twelve years of schooling to get admission in the universities of Cyprus for undergraduate level or Bachelors level. Similarly, the students must have to complete the undergraduate level education or Bachelors level Education to get admission for the post-graduate level.

However, in certain courses there is also a June intake. Visa for students is arranged by the college.

Required Tests

The students are expected to fulfill the criteria for General Academic Admission, if not cleared the students are expected to achieve a satisfactory Grade Point Average by the end of their first year.

Minimum entry criteria:

Undergraduate students
High School Leaving Certificate/Diploma with a final average grade of ‘C’ or equivalent qualification.

Graduate students
Bachelor Degree with a final average grade of ‘C’ and above.

EnglishPlacementTest(EPT)
For Cyprus Universities and Colleges English IS NOT a criterion for admission.

All local, EU and International students are required to take the “English Placement Test” (EPT) before being able to register for their academic programme of study. Students with low level of English proficiency will have to register to the English Intensive Course for one or two semesters.

Students with the following English qualifications will be exempt from the (EPT) and will be registered directly to the Undergraduate academic programme of their choice:

Accommodation Facilities

Mostly students are provided with on-campus and they prefer to stay first couple years of their studies. The benefits of staying on campus is safety, easy access to lecture halls, opportunity to meet people, friends. Travel is very convenient with regular shuttle service available in all Cypriot Universities. Students who wish to stay off-campus are availed with private dorm and rental flats in major city destinations like Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia and Morphou. In all, accommodation in Cyprus is affordable and student-friendly.

Cost of Education

Cost of living in off campus living for 12 months generally ranges € 27,000 to € 40,000 per year

Under Graduate Programme - under € 36,000 per year Post

Graduate Programme - € 2,000 to € 2,500

Work Prospects

When it comes to work while studying or after work in Cyprus both are availed with good prospects. Options like Hotel Management, Travel and Tourism Industry are booming in Cyprus availing students with many opportunities to work in the field. A student can work part-time and full-time according to the number of hours allowed by the University to work. There are great career opportunities to find work post studies. A student will have to apply for a work visa to work and live in Cyprus.

Permanent Residency

There are majorly two types of permanent residency visa:

• Cyprus Permanent Residence – Permit without right to work
• Cyprus Permanent Residence – With permit

A student will have to obtain resident with right to work if they wish to work after study in Cyprus. Once, a student acquires right to work, and then he/she can live and work in the country.
